Quick Reference Guide
Reducing Stubborn Fat
You eat clean and train consistently, and a layer around the abdomen, flanks or thighs will not move. That is body composition, not willpower. Here is the whole picture on one page.

What it can feel like
Clothes fit differently through the midsection even when the scale moves. Strong muscle stays hidden under a layer that will not shift.
Genetics, hormones, stress-related cortisol and a high density of alpha-2 fat-cell receptors in these areas make them considerably harder to mobilise than fat on the face, arms or legs. The pattern is biological. It is not a failure of discipline.
What you can try yourself
- Keep a modest calorie deficit with adequate protein. Aggressive deficits cost you muscle, which is the wrong trade here.
- Strength-train the major muscle groups two to three times a week.
- Walk and move daily. Steps and standing add up more than most people expect.
- Prioritise seven to nine hours of sleep and manage stress. Both move cortisol, and cortisol moves central fat.
- Limit late alcohol and ultra-processed extras.
- Track waist, photos and how clothes fit — not only scale weight.
- Know the spot-reduction myth. Crunches tone the muscle underneath. They do not burn the fat covering it.
What standard medical care looks like
- Lifestyle counselling and registered-dietitian support.
- Screening for thyroid disease, insulin resistance, PCOS and other metabolic drivers.
- Addressing sleep apnea, depression or high cortisol when they are present.
- Medication only where it is medically indicated for weight or metabolic disease.
- Surgical body contouring for selected candidates after shared decision-making.
- Physical therapy or core rehab when diastasis or back pain travels with it.
Where it stalls: diet and exercise improve your health regardless, and they still often leave the receptor-dense pockets exactly where they were.
Where Ivy Collaborative Healthcare fits
Emsculpt NEO is the only FDA-cleared device that reduces fat and builds muscle in the same session. Synchronised radiofrequency heats fat to trigger permanent fat-cell elimination while HIFEM+ delivers roughly 20,000 supramaximal contractions.
- Clinical averages report about 30 percent less subcutaneous fat and about 25 percent more muscle thickness in treated areas.
- Sessions run 30 minutes. A typical course is four visits about a week apart, with no downtime.
- Common areas: abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs, arms and calves. Generally for a BMI of 35 or below.
- Physician-directed plans with Dr. Jocelyn Bayliss, MD.
It complements nutrition and training rather than replacing either. Our Augusta office offers a complimentary consultation to work out whether you are a candidate.

When to see a clinician first
- Fat concentrating centrally over a short period
- Health markers changing — blood pressure, blood sugar, lipids
- Unexplained weight change in either direction
Those warrant a medical workup before a cosmetic one.
