Quick Reference Guide
Improving Abdominal Muscle Tone
You train, you eat reasonably well, and the midsection still looks soft. Visible abs need two things at once, and crunches only address one of them.

What it can feel like
You train, you eat reasonably well, and the midsection still reads as soft or undefined. Clothes catch at the waist. The core feels weaker than your arms and legs.
Visible abs need enough muscle thickness and a thin enough fat layer over it, at the same time. Genetics, age-related muscle loss, pregnancy or diastasis, and a nervous system that will not let you recruit every fiber in a crunch all limit what sit-ups can do. Crunches strengthen what you can voluntarily contract. They do not spot-reduce the fat covering it.
What you can try yourself
- Strength-train the major muscle groups two to three times a week and add load over time.
- Train the core as a brace with planks, carries and dead bugs, not only as a crunch machine.
- Keep protein adequate and run a modest calorie deficit if fat is covering the muscle.
- Walk daily and add everyday movement rather than only more sit-ups.
- Sleep seven to nine hours. Chronic stress and short sleep blunt muscle repair.
- Track waist, photos and how clothes fit rather than only scale weight.
- Know the myth. Hundreds of crunches will not burn the fat over the abs.
What standard medical care looks like
- Lifestyle counseling and registered-dietitian support for fat loss and muscle-building nutrition.
- Physical therapy or core rehab when diastasis, a hernia concern or back pain travels with it.
- Screening thyroid, sleep apnea and other drivers of stubborn midsection change.
- Supervised strength programming to address age-related muscle loss.
- Surgical body contouring or hernia repair for selected candidates.
Where it stalls: gym work builds real function and still often plateaus short of visible definition.
Where Ivy Collaborative Healthcare fits
Emsculpt NEO is FDA-cleared and builds muscle while reducing fat in the same session. HIFEM+ delivers roughly 20,000 supramaximal contractions while synchronized radiofrequency heats fat to trigger fat-cell reduction.
- Clinical averages report about 25 percent more muscle thickness and about 30 percent less subcutaneous fat in treated areas.
- Sessions run 30 minutes. A typical course is four to six visits about a week apart, with no downtime.
- Common areas: abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs, arms and calves. Generally for a BMI of 35 or below.
- Physician-directed plans with Dr. Jocelyn Bayliss, MD.
It complements nutrition and training rather than replacing either.

When to see a clinician first
- A midline bulge, which may be diastasis or a hernia
- Back pain traveling with the weakness
- A gap you can feel after pregnancy
Those warrant an evaluation before any device-based program.
